Since the rift between the worlds, shifters have lived in peace. Time passed, and they built their own great city, Telula. Though they didn't make the technological advances that the humans did, they still passed down greater knowledge, seeking natural ways to live.
The remaining kin of Tazira took up the crown, forming the royal line that still survives today, while others became farmers and craftsmen. They developed a distinct culture, able for the first time to live only amongst themselves. However, with the recent wandering humans entering their world, tensions grew high, for shifters do not easily forget.
The old king fell ill, and, having no wife and no natural heirs, left his crown to one of his favorite warriors, a human by the name of Miratone. When her time came to take the throne, the tensions within Telula began to highten. Some thought it was shameful to be ruled by a human, when they had gone through so much to separate themselves from the prosecutors. Others recognized Mira as a just ruler, and accepted her. Eventually, the population settled down, accepting the inevitable, though the rift the old king had cause would haunt Mira in years to come.
A few years later, Mira announced a decree that human would be brought to Telula to populate the failing shifter race. Many were infuriated by this, including the noble Garnet. One of the few remaining descendants of Tazira, she refused to allow humans to be brought, knowing what corruption they caused in their own world. She tried to persuade Mira that, if shifters were indeed failing, it was the will of the elders, and that humans would only dilute their powers more. Though intimidated, Mira did not back down.
The population split in two, and the threat of rebellion loomed on the horizon. Before the storm could break, a centaur army was discovered by two warriors as they scouted the desert. Panic ensued as the shifters faced a battle of a magnitude not seen in generations. The forces met as the centaurs attacked Telula. Mira and Garnet, fearing for the city, joined the battle. In the fray, Mira was struck down. Garnet managed to rally the remaining warriors, and drove out the centaurs.
As Mira had left no heirs, many high nobles, priests, and warriors began to vie for the throne. There was no clear choice, and all of them could claim some right to the monarchy. As they fought over the rule, the city began to decline. Corpses left from the battle still rotted in the lower tier, and remnants of the battle still littered the city. There was famine, and what little there was was highly overpriced. The citizens began to riot.
By this time only four of the contestants remain. They are the only ones to have survived the duels, intrigue, blackmail, murder, bribery and pressure, and were by many standards the most cunning, well-connected, violent, daring and arrogant. The entire city has been divided into four, each group supporting a would-be-monarch. This is where we stand. What path will you follow?
